Bulding Katarina well, including your team composition.

Starting items including: Lane Sustain, Mobility and Vision will let u poke well, don't take too much damage, but if you take it, you can always get a potion with ya. Boots and Boots upgrades: Why these? You will want these Sorcerer's Shoes mainly because of the Magic Penetration. Katarina as the assasin she is, wants to have tons of penetration, because the enemy team may build many MR Items against her. Core Items: You will want to rush DFG against squishy AP champions, that you feel confident playing against and for the more effective roam kill potential. You should grab Zhonya when you don't feel safe on your lane, the enemy is AD or he/she has a skill that may one shot you, if you make a mistake. Rabadon should be your 2nd dmg item, as Zhonya and DFG will be a choice for your first item. You will build all 3 items in different orded, depending on the laning phase/team composition/your skills with Katarina. Defensive/Safe Late Game Items: Standard GA or Banshee will be very effective in late game hardcore teamfights as it may decide on your win/loss. Elixir of Iron is OP as it gives you a lot of tenacity if the enemy team has the CC to stop you in any way. Grab it only when you feel you will need it a lot. Edgame Items: You will build Void Staff every game, without any questions. Abyssal scepter is useful when your toplaner/jungler is AP as it lowers the enemy MR in the area around you. Grab Lindry's Torment when the enemy team is tanky and your team has CC to make Liandry MORE EFFECTIVE. Elixir of Sorcerery: Buy every B when you have a full build.

When playing against the enemy champion, that is melee and/or has to be close to poke you, then max your W, then Q. If enemy champion will be more likely, to poke you a lot YOU NEED TO HAVE TO POKE HIM BACK! Max Q 1st then, and as the 2nd skill I suggest maxing W.

Grab teleport if you want to roam with your it to bottom lane or toplane. Grab ignite if you want to have a higher reset ratio in teamfights/kill you lane opponent more effectively. Flash is a must have for me as it saves you ass A LOT in many different situations when your Shunpo(E) is on cooldown.

Grab AP glyphs for a bit higher poke early, Marks of Magic Penetration, to increase your kill potential and Health/lvl Seals as it increases your survivability late game and in late and that is really important. I prefer MS Quints instead of AP ones, because I love to roam a lot with Katarina and that gives me a lot of mobility. I don't need tons of AP to deal with the enemy.

Classic 21/0/9 on Katarina, with movement speed and longer buff duration will be helpful to roam other lanes, so you may grab these. If you don't feel safe and you won't roam a lot, go 21/9/0 with HP masteries, bonus armor and MR + HP/per5.
